Augmented Reality
I chose Augmented Reality as my 'path of inquiry.' The definition of Augmented Reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are "augmented" by computer generated perceptual information, ideally across multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, haptic, somatosensory, and olfactory. Augmented Reality alters one's current perception of a real world environment, whereas virtual reality replaces the real world environment with a simulated one.
I am choosing this path because AR has the potential to help greatly in the medical field. ProjectDR, developed by graduates in Canada, uses medical images from sources such as CT scans and lines them up with the patient's physical body while the doctor looks at them. Future features may include automatic calibration and sensors that accurately portray the depth of organs.
My experience with AR is through mobile apps/games. I hope to expand my knowledge of this subject in the future.

M1: Historical Perspectives
Differences between New and Old Media
According to a study by Pew Research Center, "75 percent of online news consumers say they get news forwarded through email or posts on social networking sites while 52 percent say they share links to news with others via those means." Social media and blog apps have grown popular in American culture and replaced a majority of old media. New media, such as Facebook and Twitter social media sites, have become a fast way to retrieve breaking news. Old media print like newspapers are insightful opinionated information of the day's headlines although much slower to reach its audience.
New-media companies are emphasizing on community building. "There are many new journalism roles that focus on community development: Growth Editor, Audience Development Manager, and Distributed Content Editor... they open up opportunities for building long-term loyalty among readers."(Kamdar).
Several news apps are only mobile first. New York Times and Time are excellent while viewing on mobile phones. A company called "Stela is developing a collection of brand new digital comics to be consumed specifically on a smartphone or tablet." The way news is consumed has changed a great deal when compared to a few decades ago where newspapers were more common.
